Where as in England you need 3 or more A-Levels which are notorious for being incredibly difficult depending on what you do. I feel this may be something to do with the fact that as far as I know you don’t get formal qualifications until you’re 18.

How hard is high school?, do most people finish it?

To be honest I probably won’t study in America because Jesus Christ I couldn’t actually imagine having to pay off my student loans in full.

The post How hard is High school? first appeared on 🏟 Woodrow Wilson High School.

I was a little nervous at posting since I feel like everyone is going to think Im exaggerating and ungrateful but here it goes. Background info: I’m currently a junior in highschool. I’m Hispanic, and come from a low-income family. I’ll be the first one in my family to graduate from college. I’ve always loved school. Ever since I was little I knew I wanted to go to a good college and help my family. I did well for most of my school life. I was accepted into a middle school that helped low-income students in getting into the best high schools in the state. The middle school had a rigorous curriculum and most students dropped out because they couldn’t handle the pressure. The school was from 7 to 5 PM. I did well and graduated with mostly A’s with a few B’s. I was accepted into my first choice highschool in which I receive SO MUCH financial aid plus books and transportation to school. The school is an hour away which means I have to wake up very early in order to reach my bus stop. If I miss the bus I can’t go to school, which was already happened once. I return home in the evening. I don’t even relax after school. I do homework, eat, shower, than sleep.

Currently I am doing so bad at the school that I think have a GPA of less that 85%. I won’t be surprised if I’m at the bottom 20% in my school. My school has honors and AP classes, however if you want to take honors or AP, you have to apply. I have applied many times to honors and AP classes but i have never been accepted into one which is embarrassing when everyone around me believes that I take all advanced classes. It’s embarrassing when everyone around you has taken at least one honors class except you. It took me till junior year to make friends and even then i feel lonely. I wasted my entire freshman and sophomore year by myself studying for tests just to get a B-. I told myself why try to make friends when you can study, yet that made me miserable. I took the SATs and ACTs in the fall and my stats were very horrible. I did 70% better than other students in the test scores.

One of my dream schools was Uchicago, but I don’t have a chance anymore. It just hurts to know that you worked so hard at school since the age of 10 just to know you’ll never have a chance to get into your dream school. I feel like I wasted my time in middle school studying when I should’ve been having a fun time. I hate waking up to school very early . I hate being in the bus for more than an hour. I hate having to be at home by evening desiring to relax only to know that i still have homework to do. I hate my grades. I just hate…everything. I don’t regret applying to this school but the school stresses me out a lot. Dropping out and going to my public school isn’t an option to me because many people that I know will humiliate me for it and I just can’t throw away a lot of financial aid in the trash. The only thing working in my favor is affirmative action, my extracurricular activities, and the fact that I love humanities. The only excuse for my bad grades is that something occurred during my sophomore year but that’s about it. Currently I’m studying for the SAT and ACT to raise my scores a little. I honestly just want to graduate highschool by this point.

The post I feel like I’m working so hard in high school for nothing. first appeared on 🏟 Woodrow Wilson High School.

When I was in elementary school I saw the guidance counselor weekly for four years (grades 1-4). I think it would be really helpful for me and my mental health team to be able to see the records/notes from my old counselor. I’m just not sure if I’d be able to do that now that I’m an adult, or how I would go about it. If anyone has any idea if/how I can do this it’d be very appreciated!

The post Is it possible to get records from my old school guidance counselor? first appeared on 🏟 Woodrow Wilson High School.

I’m a divorced, single parent. I’m laid off from my job as of 2 weeks ago and I decided this is the perfect time to go back to school. I applied about 10 minutes ago. I’m nervous about how I will afford it, how I will take care of my kids while taking classes, but I know it will add security to our lives that my current job isn’t providing (I’m a janitor). I feel too old.

I just wanted to share with someone.

Edit: I wanted to tell everyone I’m trying to respond to all your encouraging messages, but I’m a bit overwhelmed. So thank you so much for all the support and advice!

I did want to edit again to address what I’ve been messaged about quite a bit: I do not plan to take on any loans. I’ve applied for financial aid, the Pell Grant, and a dozen scholarships. Even if it takes me 5 years to get an associates, I’m hoping to do it without incurring debt. If anyone knows of other grants or aid, I’d appreciate a heads up. (I’m not sure when I’ll be able to speak with a financial advisor with the whole Covid-19 situation right now)

I’m sorry for another edit, but I’m getting messaged with the same questions and wanted to address it here. I’ve enrolled at community college to start. I haven’t decided exactly what degree, but I’m leaning toward business/IT. The school I’ve applied to has certification for both of those that I can get in 2 semesters and then get a better job while I’m working toward a degree.

Thank you again, so much, for the encouragement and advice. I definitely need it, and I’m reading every message and responding to as many as I can.

The post Is forty too old to go to college? first appeared on 🏟 Woodrow Wilson High School.

Hi everyone, I’m at a huge crossroads in my life and I really don’t know what to do. I have a degree in Political Science, and it’s gotten me nowhere other than the fact that it’s a degree and I graduated with high honors. I’ve started working more in education and did some childcare programs, some nannying, then I worked in a therapeutic behavioral school for a year as a Para. I absolutely loved this experience and I learned so much, and I decided that teaching was something that I loved and that I was good at. I live in Illinois, and my state has a program where it pays for any degree in Sped, so my masters program this fall is completely paid for. It will last 3 years. However, the other piece is that I LOVE working outdoors. I love working with kids, adults, everyone outdoors and showing people that Illinois is more than just cornfields and Chicago. I have this dream to integrate Sped practices and inclusive education into outdoor spaces and build an outdoor therapeutic program for kids with ACES/trauma or sensory issues or behavioral issues. I feel so drawn to this field. My dream is to head up an education program at a Nature center.

So, my question is, do I need to do this Masters Program? It’ll make me more hireable and I would make a higher salary, and having formal teaching experience is something that a lot of these job applications are asking for. I know that experience is another way to break into the business but it’s increasingly hard to find a job right now.

On top of everything, I just moved into my first apartment by myself and it’s… expensive. So whatever job I find is gonna have to pay me more than the $15/hr I was making as a Para, and I can’t waste time doing whatever while I’m in school or I’ll go completely broke. 👍

For all of you that have gone through this and forged your own paths, what do you think? Should I do the masters program and get the licensure? Or should I try my luck at finding a job first?

The post I’m 25, I’m about to go back to school to get a Masters in Sped, but I really don’t know if it’s the right thing to do.
I guess maybe Finland has the best education system in the world. And also while Finland is doing many things right in education, they are also doing things outside the classroom that are affecting these test scores. Food assistance, health care and other support for families could have more to do with Finland’s achievement over the USA than anything in the actual school.

So in the past couple of weeks I’ve entered the dating scene again. Not being very good at finding women I’ve had a couple of married friends of mine set me up on two blind dates.

The first woman I went out with was a lovely woman both in looks and in personality. We went to dinner and we laughed and were having what I thought was a great time. As the evening progressed she started to talk about her job and her time at college. I listened in for a good half hour of her talking and enjoyed my time. Then she said that she was sorry for talking so much about herself and asked me where I went to college. When I replied that I did not go to college I could see her face change from a happy face to what at best could be considered an indifferent face but really a disapproving face. As I was talking I could see her looking at her watch and tapping her fork and such. I didn’t even get a chance to tell her what I do for a living before she took out her phone looked at it and said that she just got a text from her sister who needed her help. Oddly enough the phone never made a sound, now sure it could have been on vibrate but I know getting blown off when I see it. We parted and neither of us bothered to ask about doing it again.

Second woman was just as nice in both looks and personality however she was a little more blunt and up front than the other. Same thing as the other date, I listened to the life story and again the college thing came up. She at least was just right up front and blunt about it, when I told her I did not go to college she just told me that she could never see herself with someone who didn’t go to college. I thanked her for being honest and paid for our meal and left. Oddly enough she actually seemed interested in going out again but I figure what is the point.

Anyway here is the deal. I am a plumber by trade and yes I am more than familiar with all of the butt crack jokes, and I have been since I left High School. Now I’m not just some home trained fix it guy, I actually started out as a union plumber and apprenticed for 6 years.

I know that people who go to college make more in general than those of us who don’t and I respect people who go to college and understand that its more than just about a job.

But if they are worried about me being able to provide for them I think they aren’t giving me a chance. I own my own home and car, I make decent money normally and when I work a weekend emergency call I make really good money. I am not dirty and no I don’t wear my pants around the lower part of my ass.

Is not having a college degree a deal breaker for any of you?

The post Me [29 M], how important is higher education to you in seeking a partner first appeared on 🏟 Woodrow Wilson High School.

As for myself.. I was a manipulative bastard. I cheated on tests and then when I got caught I’d be sure to have someone else’s handwriting on the back of the test, so that I could prove it wasn’t me who took it and it was just.. passed on to me. I got personal with teachers so that they’d like me, and people that I disliked for whatever reason, because they were shy or boring, I would draw out of their shell because I simply enjoyed the chaos. I remember one time a guy and girl in our class were dating, he was extremely tall and she was very little. So naturally I ms-painted their faces on a midget and a regular guy having sex and slid the printed copies into a few books that were in classrooms.

The post High-school Bullies: regret? first appeared on 🏟 Woodrow Wilson High School.

When I go to the store, I’m thinking “what’s my plan if there’s a shooting?” After Texas, I just don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m a single parent and I have to work. A lot of people I know are going to homeschool. If I can’t get a job working from home, I’ll get a job at my child’s school because I’m too afraid to be away from her.

Life should not be like this. When I was in school, we were taught that the US is the best country. The safest country. Now I want nothing more than to leave. This is coming from someone who is pro-gun, but if it keeps our children safe, take the fucking guns away. This is a mental health crisis because our healthcare is shit, and let’s make it easy to get guns on top of no mental healthcare.

The post Nearly everyone I know is pulling their kids out of public school first appeared on 🏟 Woodrow Wilson High School.
